Report trip to cambodia april-may 2007

It is impossible to give a full and complete story about all our adventures in Cambodia. Nevertheless we are going to tell you about our recently finished projects which were successful thanks to your support.

Vaccination against typhus
The 24th of May we took off for Phnom Penh in order to get the syringes at Roussel Cambodge (dealer of Sanofie Pasteur).

On our way to Phnom Penh we met a French doctor and his wife, a nurse. Both were so impressed by our motivation to vaccinate Cambodian children that they accompanied us the next day to the school in Boeng Nimol.

Upon our arrival a lot of children were already waiting. We were assisted by about 15 nurses and 1 doctor from the hospital of Chuck (the closest village). A big hangar of the school was the location for the vaccination. At first the children had to give us their identification: their name, age and gender. This information was written down in Khmer (language of Cambodia) by Ruan’s nephews and nieces.

These identification-lists are important for the local doctor and the hospital. They can be used to trace any issues that may arise. The children got a paper memory-card of their vaccination detailing the kind of vaccination they were going to get. After this they got their shot. Only the youngest children were a bit frightened and cried a little until they got a little present: a few pencils, felt-tips and ballpoints. This school equipment was provided for us by RAKO Belgium, a non-profit organisation working successfully on the field in another region of Cambodia. Our vaccinations were a success. Some 500 children aged between 3 and 16 years are now protected against typhus for the next three years. We hope to repeat the project in another school next year.

15 WELLS
Vaccinations against typhus are extremely important. Access to clean water to drink and live from is also essential. Therefore we have been travelling on a moto through the neighbouring villages to look for places where clean, safe water was lacking. We talked with the mayor and a contractor about some 15 places. In some of them people are extremely poor.

A few days later the contractor started drilling. We checked the works in progress very often. Dependent upon the kind of soil, they were able to drill one or even two wells a day. The people living in the neighbourhood of the new wells had to build a concrete platform around the well themselves. Being involved in the project, they automatically gain respect for the well and are willing to clean and repair it. The people are very grateful to us and to you for helping to make this happen.

A lot of wells are necessary. Our aim for this moment is 50 wells for the entire province of Kampot. This project is tax-deductible for all amounts above 30 Euro on the special account of the Koning Boudewijnstichting.

Bridge over the canal
We had to delay this project until after the rainy season. There is too much water in this period and trucks cannot pass through. An NGO is making plans which will be mailed to us. If everything goes according to plan, the work can be started in December this year.

Toothbrushes Unilever
Thanks to a gift from Unilever we could offer toothpaste and toothbrushes to the children
