Report voyage Ruan - 6 juli 2006
The trip of 6th July this year was primarily a preparation for the vaccination of Cambodian children against typhoid.
The initial idea was to purchase vaccinations in Belgium and to take them to Cambodja in July. However a number of problems prevented this:
 |
the syringes have to be conserved at 5 degrees Celsius; |
 |
 |
- the syringes are quite expensive (18 euro each) and we had not yet collected sufficient money at that time; |
 |
 |
permission from the Cambodian government to import vaccinations takes up to two months |
After a lot of phonecalls, emails and research we decided that Ruan should first look for more information in Cambodia to organise the whole project. Possibly we could achieve the syringes in the country itself. In April 2007 we would like to go back to Cambodia to begin the vaccination of the children.
Syringes to prevent typhoid
IIn the capital Phnom Penh I visited the medical shop “pharmacie de la gare”. This was at the suggestion of my Dutch hero Edwin De Korte (Edwin lives with his wife and children in Phnom Penh.) It was an immediate success. Syringes against typhoid cost 7.50 euro each. You have to order the syringes two months in advance. They are imported from France. I was relieved. We could finally start our project. Doctors and nurses have agreed to help us to vaccinate in July 2007. We're working with two schools, each with 500 children. For the moment we have 5.567,10 euro (December 2006) This is not enough money for 1000 syringes but we still have time to arrange some more collections.
Vitamines Qualifar
About 90 little bottles of vitamins have been distributed to the children of the village sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Qualiphar from Puurs. My sister and I have given the necessary information to the parents of the children. Most of the children are suffering from Vitamin A deficiency.
Kinderziekenhuis in Siem Riep
Having received a lot of information from the Angkor Hospital for Children about the most common diseases and health problems affecting children, I decided to visit them to see for myself. The most frequent issues faced by children are: typhoid, dengé fever, malaria, etc. but also AIDS is a major problem. The hospital already has several sponsors but additional support is both needed and welcome. Donated equipment from Western hospitals is needed
